How to DIY A Storage Tray With Scrap Wood

Welcome back to the AllPrives DIY tutorial blog.

If you've recently undergone a renovation, you may find yourself with excess scrap wood. Rather than throwing it away, we want to show you how to turn that waste into treasure.

In this blog post, we'll show you how to turn that waste into treasure by making a storage tray. This tray can be utilized to hold fruits or meals in the kitchen, or even hold aromatherapy or towels in the shower room while you can take a relaxing bath. It's an excellent choice for anyone who wants to repurpose their scraps.

Let's get started!

List of materials & tools

  • Wood glue

Tools

  • Chain saw or Handsaw
  • Saw box (Saw box can help with cutting bevels)
  • Wood clamp or Tape

Unfinished rubberwood board is customizable, you can customize any size and any style, drilling, edging, etc. All are customized for free.

Now that we have all the materials ready, let's move on to the storage tray creating process!!!

Storage tray DIY instructions

Step 1: Wood cutting

To cut wood, you can choose to use a chainsaw or handsaw. As our storage tray comes with handles, we need to cut the shape of the handles first. The handle consists of 2 parts, 2 tops and 4 legs.

  1. Two tops need to be cut at 45-degree angles on both sides,
  2. Four tray legs need to be cut at 135-degree angles.

To ensure greater accuracy, I recommend using a saw box for the cutting process.

Step 2: Wood sanding

  1. I choose to stain with wood oil, so I add an extra step of sanding wood. If you want the original wood color, you may ignore this step.

Step 3: Fixing storage tray frame

  1. Fix the top and leg pieces into an Λ-looking frame by using wood glue. As I don't have wood clamps, so I use tape to help me fix it. If you don't have clamps, it's also a good idea to use tape.

Step 4: Splicing storage tray

  1. After the handles glue dries, we can start splicing the tray by using scews.

Step 5: Install handles

  1. When installing the handles to the storage tray, ensure that both sides are centered and leveled correctly.

Step 6: Paint the wood

  1. I chose to paint it a walnut color to make it look better. This is the result after I painted it twice. If you want a darker color, you can apply a few more layers.
